The security model in Microsoft Internet Explorer no longer allows links to files/directories on your local machine or on a network share to work from an Internet web site. This means that if you have a Related Link pointed to file:///c:/file.txt or file://server/share/file.txt, it won't work if your Connections Online web site is considered an Internet site.
To get the link to work, your Connections Online web site must be in the Local Intranet zone or the Trusted Sites zone. In Internet Explorer menu, go to Tools / Internet Options... / Security tab, choose Trusted Sites at the top, then press the Sites... button.
Add your Connections Online web site to the zone. If you normally connect to the site without SSL security, uncheck the Require server verification option at the bottom.
Once your Connections Online site is in the Trusted Zone, you should be able to go back to the login screen and see the Trusted Zone icon in the status bar at the bottom of the Internet Explorer window.
