Rolling Up Metrics in Connections Online
-
Sum of Child Metrics:
- The values of all child metrics are added together to determine the total for the parent metric.
-
Example: If multiple departments track individual revenue, the parent metric on the organization or another department could be Total Revenue, summing the revenue from each department as a linked metric.
-
Total Revenue(1.) = $5M
-
Branch A Loan Revenue (1.1) = $2M
- Loan Origination Revenue (1.1.1) = $1.34M
- Online Sales Revenue (1.1.2) = $0.66M
-
Branch B Loan Revenue (1.2) = $3M
- Loan Origination Revenue (1.2.1) = $1.28M
- Online Sales Revenue (1.2.2) = $1.72M
-
Branch A Loan Revenue (1.1) = $2M
-
Total Revenue(1.) = $5M
-
Average of Child Metrics:
- The parent metric calculates the average of all direct child metric values.
-
Example: If different teams measure customer satisfaction, the parent metric might reflect the average satisfaction score across all teams.
-
Overall Satisfaction Score (1.) = 87.5%
- Branch A Customer Satisfaction Score (1.1) = 85%
- Branch B Customer Satisfaction Score (1.2) = 90%
-
Overall Satisfaction Score (1.) = 87.5%
Consistency in Data Interpretation
- If child metrics use different definitions or measurement methods, the rolled-up total becomes misleading.
- Example: If one department measures productivity by hours worked while another measures it by tasks completed, the rolled-up value won’t provide a reliable comparison.
Why Roll-up Metrics?
- Aggregated Visibility: Provides leadership with a clear overview of performance across various teams or processes.
- Standardized Tracking: Ensures consistency in measurement across different organizational levels.
- Flexible Insights: Helps assess both total impact (sum) and overall trends (average) to make informed decisions.
Creating a Roll-up Metric
-
Select the
icon in the page header to create a new metric and select Create a New Metric
- Fill out the metric like normal with the Name, Rank, Owners, Format and Thresholds
-
For the Data Source choose either
- Roll-up sum of child Metrics: this will take all the direct children of the current metric and add up all the current values for this metric to display.
- Roll-up average of child Metrics: this will take all the direct children of the current metric and average all the current values for this metric to display.
- Save
This can be done for new or existing metrics by changing the data source.
Example: Net Aspiring Member Growth
In the example above 1.1 Net Aspiring Member Growth is set up to be a rolled up metric that sums the values of all its direct child metrics. In this case all of its child metrics, 1.1.1 to 1.1.7 are linked from other departments under this organizational metric. When the departments update their metrics each month, they will be updated here and summed under the parent metric.
